What is your inspiration/motivation for you work?
I find inspiration in everything around me. I love how there is a natural logic to things like in nature. I am drawn to small intricate details and patterns and repetitive motions. I like to incorporate that in my work. I like to take every day things and add a twist to them by creating something that would make people want to take a closer look. I like playing tricks on their eyes. When you first see my stuff it looks like a print but if they look closer they can see how different it is from what they initially thought it was.
What keeps me motivated is the challenge of coming up with new ideas and trying new things and going out of my comfort zone but still staying true to my cut outs.
When you’re not working on your art what other hobbies do you enjoy?
I enjoy being outdoors. I like going being in the mountains, out in the water or just laying under the sun.
I also like spending my time trying different creative things. To me it’s not about mastering each as a skill but learning new techniques to improve the skills I already have.
Is there a specific artist that you look up to or follow?
I love the work of Maud Vantours. She’s done amazing work with color and texture and really knows how to accentuate the two together.
Was there a moment that you decided that you wanted to be an artist that stands out?
I’ve always wanted to do something creative but when I realized that I wanted to pursue my paper cutouts was while working on my first exhibit, A Natural Sort of Logic. It was unlike anything I’ve ever done before and the process building up to it was enlightening. Working on it every day for months made me realize that it was something I loved doing enough to keep doing it for however long I can.
What do you enjoy the most about working on your art/the least?
The thing I love most about doing my cutouts is how meditative and calming it gets. Doing the same motion and concentrating on the small details really puts me in a zone.
The thing I like least is writing about the pieces or about myself. LOL jk (but actually)
The the thing I like least is…I can’t really think of anything. There are a bunch of things I equally dislike but not enough to write about. Other than the whole writing part, I actually enjoy everything about it.
